Statement on draft Electricity Market Reform delivery plan
Energy UK welcomes publication of the draft Electricity Market Reform delivery plan which sets out draft strike prices for renewable technologies up to 2019 and further detail on the Capacity Mechanism which Government intends to introduce in 2014.
Angela Knight, chief executive of Energy UK, said:
“The delivery plan shows where we are going with renewables, but it is only part of the story. Building new nuclear stations, replacing coal with gas and biomass has to be part of the overall plan, as does how we save energy by using less and insulating more.
And policy makers need to be much clearer on what this means for consumer bills both households and industry. Any successful delivery plan must provide the UK with new secure and low carbon energy supplies, maintain a competitive industry and keep costs affordable for consumers by putting them at the heart of any new policy.
Our members support the objectives underpinning the Electricity Market Reform. The Contracts for Difference are essential to attract the investment needed and the capacity mechanism is the insurance policy to keep the lights on.”
